Best wishes to Trevor Crowe, OMAFRA

Trevor has served as Agriculture & Rural Economic Development Advisor for Peterborough over the past 15 months. He has provided welcome support for the Roundtable and other local agricultural groups. We wish him all the best as he leaves OMAFRA on February 25. He will join his father farming full-time in Prince Edward County on their 6000 acre cash crop farm.

Trevor advises that for now, Peterborough will not have a dedicated Advisor. For assistance, call the OMAFRA Agricultural Information Contact Centre for either general agriculture, or rural and agri-food inquiries at 1-877-424-1300 or ag.info.omafra@ontario.ca

Draft of new Official Plan is now Public

The County of Peterborough’s draft new Official Plan is now available for review and comment. The Plan incudes a variety of sections relating to Agriculture, which we are following closely. Planscape Land Use Planning Consultants has been contracted to review the Plan from an agricultural perspective, paid for by the Peterborough County Federation of Agriculture.

Two of the stated goals of the Plan directly relate to agriculture:

  • Recognize the importance of agriculture in the County and ensure its continued viability by protecting prime agricultural areas; and
  • Protect rural and agricultural lands, and natural heritage features by directing new development and employment uses primarily to settlement areas within the County

The draft Plan covers all of the County townships except Cavan Monaghan, which has elected to maintain its own Official Plan. However, each township will have its own "Land Use Schedules" which may differ from each other. Each Township will also continue to work under the regulations of its own Comprehensive Zoning By-Law.

Stay tuned for more information about consultation with the farm community in the next couple of months.

You could receive full funding for 12 weeks to support a young person if they will have a meaningful learning experience on your farm. Limited spots available. The website is https://epcjobs.ca/

There is a section on the Trades Connection program at http://www.epcjobs.ca/job-seekers#the-trade-connection

2021 Farmland Value and Rental Value Survey

Let's get good information about rental rates in our area. This annual survey through the University of Guelph, the goal of which is to generate and provide public information about farmland values and rental rates, is funded by the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.

The survey should take approximately 10-15 minutes to complete. Your responses will be kept anonymous; instead, answers will be summarized at the township or county level.

A summary of the survey results will be made available on Dr. Brady Deaton's survey website, here. If you have any questions or concerns about this survey, please contact Professor Deaton:
